Ministry of Education

Taniwha are central to the identity, language and culture of Ngāti Manawa. HUIA worked in collaboration with Ngāti Manawa to produce a shared reading resource for tamariki in years 0−4 based on their four kōrero taniwha − Murupara, Hinewhārona, Ngarangihangu and Pekepeke.

Ngā kōrero taniwha o Ngāti Manawa

These reading resources were created to encourage oral language expression through shared or group reading. The language style includes local kīwaha, kupu ororite (onomatopoeia) and kupu huarite (rhyming words) that delight, inspire and excite younger children about the different taniwha.

To provide a diverse look across all four resources, HUIA worked with four different illustrators. The iwi and client were consulted at each stage to ensure the story and illustrations were heading in the right direction.
