Russell Bishop is Foundation Professor for Māori Education in the School of Education at the University of Waikato. Prior to his present appointment he was a senior lecturer in Māori Education in the Education Department at the University of Otago, and Interim Director for Otago University's Teacher Education Programme.
Russell has studied the implications of Māori people’s understandings of self-determination in research and schools for 15 years, and his work has become the basis for a nationwide research and professional development project for teachers.
Other publications of Russell’s include Culture Counts: Changing Power Relationships in Classrooms and Scaling Up Education Reform.
