Meariki is a slave to the people of Ngāi Kūwai. Her job is to obey the chief, Te Mihiau, and to look after his only daughter, Hineamuru. When Hineamuru is taken away by the warlock, Tānekikiwa, Meariki is sent to rescue her. Together with Pēhi, Hineamuru’s boyfriend, Meariki makes the hazardous journey to rescue her mistress. Along the way, they meet some interesting characters – some of whom are good, some not so good. Determined and fierce, Meariki isn’t a normal slave. In the end, Meariki discovers her true destiny.
