This set of books focuses on four species that inhabit New Zealand wahapū: pātiki, whai, tāmure and ngā mānawa.
Each book features full-colour images with some illustrated diagrams to support key messages. The main topics covered in each book include oral traditions related to the origin of each freshwater species and its relationship with other organisms and kāwai tīpuna. The books also detail the physical features, qualities and growth cycles, habitat and geographical spread throughout Aotearoa and changes in recent times that have affected the species.
