Briar Grace-Smith
Briar Grace-Smith (Ngāpuhi) is an award-winning writer of plays, feature film screenplays, short fiction and radio and television scripts. She was an inaugural recipient of the Arts Foundation Award and was the Writer in Residence at Victoria University in 2003. Her short fiction has been published in various anthologies and her plays include Purapurawhetū, Ngā Pou Wāhine, When Sun and Moon Collide and Paniora!
Briar’s first feature film The Strength of Water premiered at Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals in 2009 and the comedy horror, Fresh Meat played in the Midnight Section of the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. The short film Nine of Hearts (2012) was her debut as a Director. Briar’s television credits include Fishskin Suit, Kaitangata Twitch and This is Piki (2016). She has worked as a Development Executive for the New Zealand Film Commission and taught Writing for Theatre at IIML, Victoria University. Briar lives in Paekākāriki on the Kāpiti Coast with her whānau, including two cats and one dog.
